Rockwell Automation Stock Falls 7% Despite Strong Q3 Results and Higher Full-Year Guidance

Rockwell Automation (NYSE: ROK) shares fell 7% on Tuesday despite reporting strong third-quarter results, as investors took profits following a solid rally in the stock and weighed expectations after another quarter of robust growth.

Third-quarter sales increased 8% year over year to $2.31 billion, while organic sales climbed 10%. Adjusted earnings per share rose 22% to $3.49, and GAAP EPS increased 40% to $3.65. Following the strong quarter, Rockwell raised its full-year fiscal 2026 sales and earnings guidance.

Broad-Based Industrial Demand Supports Growth

Rockwell delivered strong growth across its core automation businesses, driven by healthy customer demand and improving industrial activity.

Management highlighted continued strength in semiconductor, data center and warehouse automation markets, alongside improving demand from automotive and life sciences customers. Software & Control revenue increased 19%, while Intelligent Devices sales rose 12%, both supported by higher volumes and favorable product mix.

The company also reported 6% growth in organic annual recurring revenue (ARR), with software ARR increasing at a high-single-digit pace.

Margins Expand as Guidance Moves Higher

Operating performance continued to improve during the quarter.

Enterprise operating margin expanded to 22.3% from 19.5% a year earlier, supported by higher sales volume, favorable mix and benefits from the dissolution of the Sensia joint venture. Operating cash flow increased to $724 million, while free cash flow climbed to $654 million.

Reflecting the strong execution, Rockwell raised its fiscal 2026 outlook. The company now expects reported and organic sales growth of 7.5% to 9.5%, up from the previous 5% to 9% range, while adjusted EPS guidance was increased to $13.00-$13.30.

Rockwell Automation Surges 11% as Industrial Automation Comeback Takes Shape

Tuesday, May 5, 2026

In a session full of earnings-day disappointments, Rockwell Automation stands out as the cleanest beat-and-raise story of the day. Shares jumped approximately 11% after the Milwaukee-based industrial automation leader delivered a quarter that exceeded expectations on virtually every metric and raised full-year guidance meaningfully — a stark contrast to the cautious guides dragging down Shopify, Eaton, and PayPal.

The Numbers

Fiscal Q2 2026 sales of $2.24 billion grew 12% year-over-year, with organic growth of 9% — well above expectations. Adjusted EPS of $3.30 surged 32% from $2.50 a year ago, and diluted EPS of $3.10 rose 40%. Enterprise operating margin expanded to 22.5% from 19.0% a year ago — 350 basis points of margin improvement driven by volume leverage, positive price/cost dynamics, and favorable mix. Free cash flow nearly doubled to $275 million from $171 million. ROIC on an adjusted basis improved to 17.2% from 14.2%.

The Segment Breakdown

The standout was Software & Control, which posted 17% organic sales growth and a 34.9% segment operating margin — up from 30.1% a year ago. This is Rockwell's highest-margin, most strategically valuable business, and its acceleration is the core reason the stock is reacting this strongly. Software-driven recurring revenue is precisely what industrial automation investors want to see scaling. Annual recurring revenue (ARR) grew 6% year-over-year.

Intelligent Devices — hardware controllers, sensors, drives — grew 9% organically with margins expanding to 20.9% from 17.7%, a significant recovery for a segment that was plagued by inventory destocking through much of 2024–2025. CEO Blake Moret specifically cited improving demand in warehouse automation, data centers, semiconductors, and energy — a list that maps directly onto the infrastructure buildout themes running through this earnings season.

Lifecycle Services (aftermarket, maintenance) was the soft spot, with organic sales declining 1% and margins essentially flat at 14.6%, reflecting lumpiness in service contract timing.

The Guidance Raise

The guidance upgrade is what's driving the 10% move. Full-year adjusted EPS is now guided to $12.50–$13.10, up sharply from the prior range of $11.40–$12.20 — a roughly $1 raise at the midpoint. Organic sales growth guidance moved to 5–9% from 2–6%. For a company that spent much of 2024 working through an inventory correction and guiding conservatively, this is the inflection point investors have been waiting for.

Moret's candor was balanced — he acknowledged that "capital investment remains muted in other key verticals" — but the data center, warehouse, and semiconductor demand vectors are clearly more than offsetting the weakness in traditional manufacturing end markets.

The Bigger Picture

Rockwell's quarter is the industrial automation sector's answer to a key question: was the 2024–2025 inventory destocking cycle a structural problem or a cyclical one? Today's results make a compelling case for the latter. With Software & Control at 35% margins and accelerating, Intelligent Devices recovering, and the AI-linked data center and semiconductor verticals providing structural tailwinds, Rockwell is positioned at the intersection of reshoring, automation, and digital infrastructure — three of the most durable capital spending themes of the decade.

After a prolonged period of underperformance during the destocking cycle, today's 11% move suggests the market is beginning to reprice that potential.
