DOCOMO and SK Telecom outline roadmap for AI-driven mobile networks

31 March 2026 — NTT DOCOMO, INC. and SK Telecom released a joint white paper detailing key requirements for advancing virtualized radio access networks (vRAN) and the transition toward AI-powered RAN (AI-RAN).

The report identifies three core technological pillars for next-generation mobile networks: strict separation of hardware and software to accelerate innovation, resource pooling to improve efficiency and reduce power consumption, and the integration of AI computing capabilities within network infrastructure.

The companies highlighted that vRAN evolution will enable more flexible and software-driven network operations, while AI-RAN aims to transform base stations into platforms capable of delivering both connectivity and AI services.

This initiative builds on ongoing collaboration between the two operators since 2022, focusing on 5G evolution and 6G development. Both companies emphasized that closer cooperation between telecom operators and equipment vendors will be essential to accelerate innovation and global standardization in future mobile networks.
NTT DOCOMO, INC. and NEC Corporation have launched Japan’s first commercial 5G core network (5GC) on Amazon Web Services (AWS), marking a major step in hybrid cloud-based telecom infrastructure.

The 5GC, commercially launched on February 26, 2026, combines DOCOMO’s proprietary virtualization platform with AWS to create a hybrid cloud architecture. The system enables dynamic capacity scaling during traffic surges and is designed to enhance reliability, flexibility, and sustainability. Operational testing showed power consumption reductions of around 70% using AWS Graviton processors.

In a separate world-first milestone, DOCOMO and its group companies automated the entire 5GC design and construction process using Agentic AI integrated with GitOps on AWS. By leveraging Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and infrastructure-as-code methodologies, the companies reduced network construction time by approximately 80% compared to conventional approaches.

The initiative is being showcased at Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, highlighting AI-driven automation and cloud-native architecture as the next phase of telecom network evolution.
ServiceNow, NTT DOCOMO and StarHub have launched a joint initiative to automate international roaming issue resolution using ServiceNow CRM.

Unveiled at Mobile World Congress, the companies are developing an inter-carrier operational model on the ServiceNow AI Platform that uses AI-driven workflows to identify and resolve roaming faults in real time. The solution replaces fragmented, manual ticketing processes with standardized, autonomous coordination between carriers, improving visibility and reducing service disruptions for travelers.

Technical validation is underway, with a commercial launch targeted for the second half of 2026. The partners aim to deliver faster fault recovery, improved service reliability, and a scalable global framework for cross-border roaming operations.

NTT DOCOMO, INC. has begun commercial deployment of an agentic AI system for mobile network maintenance, going live on February 4, 2026.

Built on Amazon Web Services’ Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, the platform analyzes real-time traffic and alarm data from over one million network devices across 4G and 5G environments. It detects anomalies, identifies likely failure points, and recommends remediation actions.

Using one of the world’s largest telecom datasets, the system cuts response times for complex failures by more than 50%, reducing service disruption and enhancing network reliability. The solution will be showcased at MWC Barcelona 2026.
NTT, Inc., together with NTT DOCOMO, INC. and NTT DATA Group Corporation, announced that they will jointly exhibit at MWC Barcelona 2026, marking their first combined exhibition in seven years. The event will take place in Barcelona from March 2 to March 5, 2026, as the group seeks to strengthen its global brand presence following its corporate identity renewal in 2025.

Under the theme “Photonics Unlocks an Intelligent Power-Optimized Future,” the NTT Group will showcase technologies centered on IOWN optical innovations aimed at reducing energy consumption in an AI-driven society. Exhibits will highlight AI-resilient digital infrastructure, photonics-based data center and network technologies, optical quantum computing, and AI-powered services and solutions. NTT President and CEO Akira Shimada is also scheduled to deliver a keynote speech outlining how optical technologies can support sustainable growth amid rising AI-related power demand.

NTT DOCOMO Completes World’s First Outdoor Trial of AI-Driven 6G Wireless Technology

NTT DOCOMO has successfully carried out the world’s first outdoor field trial using real-time transceiver systems equipped with AI-powered wireless interface technology for future 6G networks. Conducted with NTT, Nokia Bell Labs, and SK Telecom, the tests confirmed that AI-enhanced transmission and reception can boost throughput by up to 100% under real outdoor conditions.

The AI-AI wireless interface applies artificial intelligence to both the transmitter and receiver, dynamically optimizing modulation and demodulation based on changing radio conditions. The technology, previously verified indoors, was tested outdoors across three environments in Yokosuka City, including curved roads, areas with partial obstacles, and roads allowing speeds up to 60 km/h.

Across all scenarios, AI integration improved stability and transmission speed. In the most challenging environment—public roads with curves and obstructions—average throughput rose 18%, with peak improvements reaching 100% compared to conventional methods. Additional trials at NTT’s Yokosuka R&D Center showed gains of up to 20% at various speeds, including 60 km/h, under both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight conditions.

DOCOMO says the results demonstrate the technology’s robustness in real-world environments, marking a major advance toward practical 6G systems that offer higher transmission efficiency and lower power consumption. The company plans to continue testing under more complex conditions, including speeds exceeding 100 km/h, while working with global partners on 6G standardization and deployment.

The AI-driven 6G technology will be showcased at the NTT R&D Forum 2025.
