Equifax Stock Falls 2.1% as BMO Capital Cuts Price Target to $160

Equifax shares fell 2.1% after BMO Capital Markets lowered its price target on the credit-reporting company to $160 from $179 while maintaining a Market Perform rating.

The revised target still implies potential upside from Equifax’s current share price of about $137.82, but the reduction signals a more cautious view on the stock’s near-term valuation and earnings outlook.

More broadly, Equifax continues to face sensitivity to conditions in mortgage and consumer credit markets, where transaction volumes can influence demand for credit-reporting and verification services. Elevated interest rates and uneven housing activity may also limit the pace of recovery in some of the company’s end markets.

At the same time, Equifax’s Workforce Solutions and broader data and analytics businesses remain important longer-term growth drivers.

The 2.1% decline suggests investors focused on BMO’s lower valuation target and continued uncertainty around the pace of improvement in credit-sensitive markets.
Equifax reported record first-quarter 2026 revenue of $1.65 billion, up 14% year-on-year and exceeding its guidance midpoint by $37 million, driven largely by strong U.S. mortgage activity early in the quarter.

Growth was broad-based, with U.S. mortgage revenue rising 38%, Workforce Solutions increasing 10%, and international revenue up 11%. The company also highlighted continued momentum in new product innovation, supported by its cloud and AI capabilities.

Equifax returned $327 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, reflecting strong cash flow generation.

Despite the strong start, the company maintained its full-year guidance, citing uncertainty around interest rates and mortgage demand, while slightly increasing reported revenue and adjusted EPS outlook due to foreign exchange effects.

Equifax Inc said its third-quarter 2025 Market Pulse Index shows modest improvement in U.S. consumer financial health, particularly among lower credit score tiers and Gen Z consumers. The index rose to 61.6 by the end of September 2025, up 0.35% quarter over quarter, marking the first increase for consumers with credit scores below 580 since early 2024.

Equifax noted that while the “K-shaped” economic divide between higher- and lower-income households persists, the gap is no longer widening as rapidly. Gen Z recorded the fastest improvement in average index scores, though with wide variability, suggesting uneven financial progress as younger consumers enter the workforce and build credit. Higher credit tiers and older generations continued to benefit from accumulated assets, supporting overall stability.
