Scotiabank Stock Jumps 5% as Record Q3 Earnings and Strong Revenue Impress Investors

Bank of Nova Scotia (NYSE: BNS) shares jumped about 5% on Tuesday after Scotiabank reported record third-quarter results, with stronger earnings, expanding margins and broad-based growth across its major businesses.

Net income increased to C$2.95 billion from C$2.53 billion a year earlier, while diluted EPS climbed to C$2.27 from C$1.84. On an adjusted basis, net income reached C$2.97 billion and EPS rose to C$2.28 from C$1.88. Adjusted return on equity improved to 14.2% from 12.4%, exceeding the bank's 14% medium-term target.

Why Is BNS Stock Rising?

The rally appears to reflect the strength and breadth of the quarter rather than one individual earnings driver.

Total revenue reached C$10.54 billion, up from C$9.49 billion a year earlier and C$9.84 billion in the previous quarter. Net interest income increased to C$5.87 billion, while non-interest income reached C$4.67 billion.

Performance was particularly strong across Scotiabank's major divisions. Canadian Banking earnings increased 12% year over year, Global Wealth Management earnings jumped 23%, and Global Banking and Markets delivered record earnings of C$647 million, up 37%. International Banking earnings also increased 8%.

Credit trends provided another positive signal. Provisions for credit losses declined sequentially to C$1.08 billion from C$1.22 billion, although they remained slightly above C$1.04 billion a year earlier.

Scotiabank also maintained a solid CET1 capital ratio of 13.1% while repurchasing 8.6 million shares during the quarter. The bank has returned C$6.3 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks so far this fiscal year.

The 5% gain in BNS shares suggests investors are rewarding the combination of record earnings, stronger profitability, improving margins and broad-based operating momentum across the bank.
