Scotiabank (TSX: BNS) (NYSE: BNS) reported first-quarter net income of $2.30 billion, more than doubling from $993 million a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share rose to $1.73 from $0.66. On an adjusted basis, net income was $2.70 billion and diluted EPS was $2.05, up from $1.76 last year. Adjusted return on equity improved to 13% from 11.8%.

Canadian Banking earnings increased 5% year over year to $960 million, supported by revenue growth and expense discipline, with ROE rising to 18.1%. International Banking earnings grew 7% to $737 million, with ROE improving to 16%. Global Wealth Management posted adjusted earnings of $491 million, up 18%, as assets under management climbed 10% to $436 billion. Global Banking and Markets earned $544 million, up 5%, driven by stronger fee-based revenue and capital markets activity.

Scotiabank reported a Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio of 13.3% and reaffirmed confidence in achieving a return on equity above 14% by 2027.
