Union Pacific Posts Record Q3 Results as Volume Growth and Pricing Drive Earnings Higher

Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) reported record third-quarter 2026 results, with higher volumes, stronger pricing and improved operating execution lifting revenue and earnings.

Operating revenue increased 15% year over year to $7.2 billion, supported by a 6% increase in revenue carloads, higher fuel surcharges, core pricing gains and increased other revenue. Freight revenue excluding fuel surcharge rose 6%.

Net income increased 16% to $2.1 billion, while diluted EPS rose 16% to $3.49. Adjusted EPS increased 15% to $3.53.

Operational metrics also improved. Freight car velocity increased 1%, terminal dwell improved 2%, fuel consumption efficiency improved 2%, and workforce productivity rose 5%. The reported operating ratio improved 10 basis points to 59.1%, although the adjusted operating ratio worsened slightly to 58.8%. Higher fuel prices created a 140-basis-point headwind to the operating ratio.

Management said the company handled higher customer demand while maintaining strong service levels and reaffirmed its broader 2026 outlook, including high-single-digit reported EPS growth and pricing dollars exceeding inflation dollars.

Union Pacific also maintained its $3.5 billion capital plan and said it continues to target industry-leading operating performance, strong cash generation and consistent dividend growth.

Overall, the quarter showed strong volume growth, pricing power and operating discipline, with elevated fuel costs remaining the main drag on margin improvement.
Union Pacific reported first-quarter 2026 net income of $1.7 billion, with diluted earnings per share of $2.87 and adjusted EPS of $2.93. Revenue reached $6.2 billion, up 3% year-over-year, while freight revenue increased 4%, supported by pricing gains and favorable business mix.

Operational performance improved, with the operating ratio declining to 60.5% and efficiency gains across key metrics such as freight velocity, terminal dwell time, and fuel consumption. The company also reported record first-quarter results for revenue, operating income, and freight-related metrics.

Union Pacific reaffirmed its 2026 outlook, expecting continued earnings growth, improved efficiency, and strong cash generation, supported by disciplined capital allocation and steady demand.

Union Pacific announced it has reached an agreement with the American Train Dispatchers Association to guarantee lifetime job protection for union members in connection with its planned merger with Norfolk Southern.

The agreement ensures that train dispatchers employed at the time of the merger will retain their jobs for life, subject to standard employment conditions. The ATDA becomes the sixth major rail union to secure similar protections as part of the proposed combination, which aims to create the first single-line, coast-to-coast railroad in the United States.

Union Pacific said the deal reflects its commitment to workforce stability and support during the merger process, while union representatives expressed support for the transaction following the job security assurances.

The agreement marks a key milestone in advancing the merger, highlighting efforts to address labor concerns and secure broader industry backing.
