Union Pacific Posts Record Q3 Results as Volume Growth and Pricing Drive Earnings Higher
Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) reported record third-quarter 2026 results, with higher volumes, stronger pricing and improved operating execution lifting revenue and earnings.
Operating revenue increased 15% year over year to $7.2 billion, supported by a 6% increase in revenue carloads, higher fuel surcharges, core pricing gains and increased other revenue. Freight revenue excluding fuel surcharge rose 6%.
Net income increased 16% to $2.1 billion, while diluted EPS rose 16% to $3.49. Adjusted EPS increased 15% to $3.53.
Operational metrics also improved. Freight car velocity increased 1%, terminal dwell improved 2%, fuel consumption efficiency improved 2%, and workforce productivity rose 5%. The reported operating ratio improved 10 basis points to 59.1%, although the adjusted operating ratio worsened slightly to 58.8%. Higher fuel prices created a 140-basis-point headwind to the operating ratio.
Management said the company handled higher customer demand while maintaining strong service levels and reaffirmed its broader 2026 outlook, including high-single-digit reported EPS growth and pricing dollars exceeding inflation dollars.
Union Pacific also maintained its $3.5 billion capital plan and said it continues to target industry-leading operating performance, strong cash generation and consistent dividend growth.
Overall, the quarter showed strong volume growth, pricing power and operating discipline, with elevated fuel costs remaining the main drag on margin improvement.
