Union Pacific Railroad to send Big Boy No. 4014 on western tour for America’s 250th anniversary

Union Pacific announced that its historic Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive will embark on the western leg of a coast-to-coast tour celebrating the United States’ 250th birthday, featuring 27 whistle-stops across Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California.

The 1.2-million-pound locomotive, the world’s largest operating steam engine, will depart Cheyenne, Wyoming, on March 29. The tour includes four public display days—April 10-11 in Roseville, California, and April 18-19 in Ogden, Utah—where visitors can view the locomotive up close alongside the “Experience the Union Pacific” rail car exhibit.

Originally built during World War II to haul freight over Utah’s Wasatch Range, Big Boy No. 4014 is the only one of 25 locomotives still in operation. A real-time tracking map of the journey will be available online, with additional details for the eastern leg to be announced later.
