Corning Slips 0.5% Despite Strong Q3 Growth and Upbeat Q4 Outlook

Corning (NYSE: GLW) shares fell about 0.5% even after the company reported third-quarter results above guidance, driven by strong demand in Optical Communications and continued AI infrastructure growth.

Core sales increased 19% year over year to $5.08 billion, while core EPS rose 36% to $0.91. GAAP sales increased 18% to $4.86 billion, and GAAP EPS climbed 56% to $0.78.

Optical Communications was the main growth engine, with sales up 44% to $2.38 billion. Enterprise Networks revenue increased 84%, while Gen AI-related product sales more than doubled. Solar sales also rose 37%, although production ramped more slowly than expected and the segment posted a $7 million loss.

Margins improved meaningfully. Core gross margin expanded 150 basis points to 40.5%, while core operating margin increased 310 basis points to 22.7%. Adjusted free cash flow was $661 million for the quarter.

For the fourth quarter, Corning expects core sales of $5.2 billion to $5.3 billion, representing about 19% growth, and core EPS of $0.96 to $1.00, up roughly 36% year over year.

The slight 0.5% decline appears to reflect a muted reaction to otherwise strong results, with investors possibly weighing slower-than-expected solar execution and weakness in Glass Innovations against robust AI-related optical demand, expanding margins and a strong Q4 outlook.

Corning Stock Surges 9.8% as China Renaissance Starts Coverage With Buy Rating

Corning (NYSE: GLW) shares jumped 9.8% Tuesday after China Renaissance initiated coverage of the technology materials company with a bullish rating.

China Renaissance started Corning at Buy with a $238 price target. With GLW trading around $169.45, the target implies approximately 40% upside from current levels.

The positive analyst call comes as Corning benefits from growing demand for optical connectivity infrastructure. The company is a major supplier of fiber-optic products used in data centers and communications networks, positioning it to benefit from the rapid expansion of AI-related computing infrastructure and hyperscale data centers.

Corning also operates across display glass, specialty materials, environmental technologies and life sciences, although its optical communications business has become an increasingly important part of the growth story as technology companies invest heavily in AI infrastructure.

The Buy rating and $238 target reinforce expectations that AI-driven data-center investment could provide a significant growth opportunity for Corning, helping GLW shares climb nearly 10% during Tuesday’s session.
Corning Stock Plunges 18% Despite Strong Earnings as Investors React to AI-Driven Growth Expectations

Corning (NYSE: GLW) shares tumbled 18% on Tuesday despite the specialty glass and optical connectivity company reporting another quarter of strong financial growth and raising its long-term growth ambitions.

The company delivered an impressive second quarter, with core sales rising 17% year over year to $4.74 billion and core EPS increasing 30% to $0.78. GAAP revenue also climbed 17% to $4.51 billion, while operating cash flow reached $1.72 billion. Profitability continued to improve, with core gross margin expanding to 39.6% and core operating margin increasing to 20.9%.

Growth was led by the Optical Communications segment, where sales jumped 32% to $2.07 billion. Enterprise Networks revenue surged 65%, driven by accelerating demand for AI infrastructure and high-speed optical connectivity. The Solar business also delivered standout performance, with sales soaring 90%, and management expects profitability to improve further in the third quarter.

Corning also announced major strategic developments, including new long-term partnerships with Amazon and NVIDIA. Amazon signed a multiyear, multibillion-dollar agreement for optical fiber and connectivity products supporting its expanding U.S. data center footprint, while NVIDIA partnered with Corning to expand U.S. optical connectivity manufacturing capacity tenfold and increase domestic fiber production by more than 50% to meet growing AI infrastructure demand.

Looking ahead, management issued another strong outlook. Third-quarter core sales are expected to reach $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion, representing approximately 16% year-over-year growth, while core EPS is projected at $0.85 to $0.89, up roughly 28%. The company also upgraded its long-term Springboard Plan, targeting an annualized revenue run rate of $20 billion by the end of 2026, $30 billion by the end of 2028, and $40 billion by 2030.

Despite the robust results, the sharp selloff likely reflects valuation and expectations rather than operating performance. Corning had rallied significantly ahead of earnings on enthusiasm surrounding AI infrastructure spending and its expanding partnerships with hyperscalers. Although the company delivered strong results and maintained an optimistic outlook, investors may have viewed the report as lacking additional positive surprises after the recent rally, prompting profit-taking and sending the stock sharply lower.
Corning shares fall despite strong Q1 results on weaker outlook and tech pressure

Shares of Corning Incorporated (GLW) declined sharply, falling around 9% following the earnings release, as investors focused on softer guidance and broader tech-sector weakness despite strong first-quarter results.

The Corning Incorporated reported strong Q1 2026 performance, with core sales rising 18% to $4.35 billion and core EPS increasing 30% to $0.70, driven by robust demand in AI-related optical communications and solar products. Optical Communications revenue grew 36%, while Solar sales surged 80% year over year.

However, the stock reaction was negative as investors focused on forward expectations. According to Reuters, Corning’s second-quarter revenue outlook of around $4.6 billion came slightly below market expectations, while weakness in consumer electronics and smartphone demand continued to weigh on non-optical segments. Additional pressure came from company-specific and external factors. Management highlighted an extended shutdown at its solar wafer facility, which will add costs in the second quarter, while broader market sentiment toward technology stocks also turned negative during the session. (Reuters)

Overall, the share price decline reflects investor concerns about near-term growth and guidance rather than current performance, as strong AI-driven demand was overshadowed by softer outlook and macro headwinds.
