Norfolk Southern and Schneider Expand Intermodal Partnership Across Eastern U.S.

Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) and Schneider National (NYSE: SNDR) announced a strategic agreement to expand domestic intermodal capacity across the eastern United States, combining Norfolk Southern’s rail network with Schneider’s asset-based intermodal operations.

Under the partnership, Schneider will transition its primary eastern rail provider to Norfolk Southern. The move is intended to broaden Schneider’s access to key markets, improve network flexibility and create additional opportunities to shift freight from truckload transportation to intermodal.

Schneider brings approximately 23,900 chassis, 26,800 containers and access to more than 60 intermodal rail hubs across North America. More than 90% of its domestic dray moves are handled by company drivers, giving the carrier greater control over pickup and delivery operations.

Norfolk Southern, meanwhile, is investing across its 22-state intermodal network, including terminal expansions, gateway capacity, double-stack clearance projects and reliability improvements. Its intermodal volumes increased 3% in the third quarter of 2026, supported by consumer demand, truck-market conditions and network improvements.

The companies highlighted projects including new Cincinnati-to-Atlanta service, East Edge double-stack clearance improvements connecting the Midwest and New England, and terminal investments in Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina and Illinois.

The agreement strengthens Norfolk Southern’s position in domestic intermodal while giving Schneider a larger eastern rail platform. For both companies, the partnership could support longer-term volume growth by offering shippers a more scalable and cost-efficient alternative to over-the-road freight.
Schneider National reported weaker-than-expected results for the fourth quarter of 2025 as softer market conditions and a shortened peak season weighed on volumes and profitability.

The company posted operating revenues of $1.4 billion in the quarter, up from $1.3 billion a year earlier, but income from operations declined to $36.5 million from $42.4 million. Diluted earnings per share fell to $0.13 from $0.18, while adjusted diluted EPS also came in at $0.13 compared with $0.20 in the prior year. Management cited muted demand starting in November, higher third-party carrier costs, unplanned customer shutdowns, and rising healthcare expenses as key headwinds, partly offset by some improvement late in December.

For the full year, Schneider generated operating revenues of $5.67 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $617.5 million. Looking ahead, the company issued full-year 2026 adjusted diluted EPS guidance of $0.70 to $1.00 and net capital expenditures guidance of $400 to $450 million. Schneider also highlighted ongoing cost savings initiatives, growth in dedicated and intermodal services, and continued capital returns through dividends and a newly authorized $150 million share repurchase program.

Schneider National Reports Q3 2025 Results; Maintains Full-Year Outlook Despite Softer Market

Schneider National (NYSE: SNDR) reported third-quarter 2025 operating revenues of $1.45 billion, up 10% from $1.32 billion a year earlier, driven by the acquisition of Cowan Systems and steady growth across its segments. Income from operations fell 18% to $35.3 million due to higher claims costs and inflationary pressures. Net income declined 37% to $19.4 million, with diluted EPS at $0.11 versus $0.17 in 2024. Adjusted EPS was $0.12.

Truckload segment revenues rose 17% to $624.5 million, fueled by a 22% increase in Dedicated volume from Cowan’s integration, though margins tightened due to startup inefficiencies and higher insurance and equipment costs. Intermodal revenue grew 6% to $281.4 million on 10% volume growth, while Logistics sales rose 6% to $332.1 million but faced weaker brokerage activity.

Schneider reaffirmed its full-year adjusted EPS guidance of approximately $0.70 and net capital expenditures of about $300 million. CEO Mark Rourke highlighted resilient performance despite sub-seasonal freight trends, noting ongoing progress in structural efficiency initiatives and growth in Dedicated and Intermodal operations.
