Mercado Libre Falls 5.8% Premarket as Heavy Investment Pressures Margins Despite 45% Revenue Growth

Mercado Libre (NASDAQ: MELI) shares fell about 5.8% in premarket trading despite reporting third-quarter revenue of $10.75 billion, up 45% year over year.

Commerce remained strong, with gross merchandise volume rising 33% on an FX-neutral basis to about $23 billion and items sold increasing 36%. Advertising revenue grew 58% in U.S. dollars, while Mercado Pago monthly active users rose 29% to approximately 93 million.

Fintech growth also remained robust. Mercado Pago revenue increased 42% to $4.6 billion, assets under management rose 67% to $25 billion, and the credit portfolio expanded 62% to $17.9 billion.

However, profitability appears to be the main source of investor concern. Operating income was $676 million, with a 6.3% margin that declined slightly sequentially as Mercado Libre increased spending on fulfillment capacity, free shipping and marketing.

The company expanded fulfillment capacity by nearly 20% quarter over quarter ahead of peak season, while also investing heavily in customer acquisition and engagement, particularly in Brazil.

The 5.8% premarket decline appears to reflect concern that strong top-line growth is requiring increasingly heavy investment, limiting near-term margin expansion. While commerce, fintech and advertising continue to grow rapidly, investors may be focusing on whether Mercado Libre can convert that scale into stronger operating leverage.
Mercado Libre Slips 5% After Hours Despite Blowout Quarter as Margin Concerns Weigh

Montevideo, May 7, 2026 — Shares in Mercado Libre fell around 5% in after-hours trading yesterday despite the Latin American e-commerce and fintech giant reporting its fastest revenue growth in nearly four years, as investors focused on thinner-than-expected operating margins rather than the exceptional top-line momentum.

Net revenue grew 49% year-over-year to $8.8 billion, a pace not seen since Q2 2022. The commerce business delivered $5 billion in revenue, up 47%, with GMV reaching $19 billion and items sold surging 47% to 722 million. The standout was Brazil, where the company's decision to lower its free shipping threshold in 2025 continued to pay off spectacularly — unique buyer growth accelerated to 32% year-over-year, the fastest in five years, while sold items jumped 56%. Mercado Pago, the fintech arm, grew revenue 51% to $4 billion, with monthly active users hitting 83 million and the credit portfolio expanding 87% to $14.6 billion in the largest quarterly increase in nominal terms ever recorded.

The results, by almost any measure, were exceptional. Yet the after-hours reaction was negative, and the likely explanation lies in the margin profile. Income from operations came in at $611 million, representing a 6.9% operating margin — a level that, while consistent with the company's investment-heavy posture, appears to have fallen short of what some analysts had modeled. With the company continuing to pour capital into free shipping, logistics expansion, credit card issuance, and AI infrastructure, profitability is deliberately being subordinated to market share gains.

That trade-off has served Mercado Libre well over time, but at a valuation that demands strong profitability alongside hypergrowth, even a modest margin miss can trigger an outsized reaction. Net income of $417 million, a 4.7% margin, tells the story of a company choosing to invest aggressively rather than harvest returns — a bet that has historically proven correct, but one that requires patient capital to hold through moments like this.

MercadoLibre Q3 2025: Revenue Surges 39% as Commerce and Fintech Ecosystems Accelerate

MercadoLibre (Nasdaq: MELI) reported strong third-quarter 2025 results with revenue and financial income rising 39% year-over-year to $7.41 billion, or 49% in FX-neutral terms — marking the company’s 27th consecutive quarter of 30%+ annual growth. Operating income reached $724 million, up 30%, with a 9.8% margin, while net income increased 6% to $421 million (5.7% margin). Total Payment Volume jumped 41% to $71.2 billion, and Gross Merchandise Volume climbed 28% to $16.5 billion.

In its commerce segment, MercadoLibre continued to expand e-commerce penetration across Latin America. Brazil led growth as the company reduced its free shipping threshold from R$79 to R$19, boosting unique buyers by 29% and sold items by 42%. Mexico saw similar momentum with sold items up 42% and record-high fulfillment efficiency, while Argentina maintained resilient growth despite macro challenges, with sold items up 34%.

In fintech, Mercado Pago strengthened its leadership with 72 million active users (+29% YoY), expanding credit portfolios by 83% to $11 billion and achieving record-low first-payment defaults. Its credit card business in Brazil reached profitability on half the portfolio, while new launches in Argentina aim to deepen financial inclusion. Acquiring TPV grew strongly in Brazil (+28%), Mexico (+53%), and Argentina (+70% FX-neutral).

Despite increased investments in logistics, social commerce, and financial services, MercadoLibre maintained strong profitability and cash generation, posting $206 million in adjusted free cash flow after heavy reinvestment in credit expansion. The company highlighted its long-term strategy to balance rapid growth with disciplined investment, leveraging its scale to drive financial inclusion and digital commerce across Latin America.
