Mercado Libre Slips 5% After Hours Despite Blowout Quarter as Margin Concerns Weigh

Montevideo, May 7, 2026 — Shares in Mercado Libre fell around 5% in after-hours trading yesterday despite the Latin American e-commerce and fintech giant reporting its fastest revenue growth in nearly four years, as investors focused on thinner-than-expected operating margins rather than the exceptional top-line momentum.

Net revenue grew 49% year-over-year to $8.8 billion, a pace not seen since Q2 2022. The commerce business delivered $5 billion in revenue, up 47%, with GMV reaching $19 billion and items sold surging 47% to 722 million. The standout was Brazil, where the company's decision to lower its free shipping threshold in 2025 continued to pay off spectacularly — unique buyer growth accelerated to 32% year-over-year, the fastest in five years, while sold items jumped 56%. Mercado Pago, the fintech arm, grew revenue 51% to $4 billion, with monthly active users hitting 83 million and the credit portfolio expanding 87% to $14.6 billion in the largest quarterly increase in nominal terms ever recorded.

The results, by almost any measure, were exceptional. Yet the after-hours reaction was negative, and the likely explanation lies in the margin profile. Income from operations came in at $611 million, representing a 6.9% operating margin — a level that, while consistent with the company's investment-heavy posture, appears to have fallen short of what some analysts had modeled. With the company continuing to pour capital into free shipping, logistics expansion, credit card issuance, and AI infrastructure, profitability is deliberately being subordinated to market share gains.

That trade-off has served Mercado Libre well over time, but at a valuation that demands strong profitability alongside hypergrowth, even a modest margin miss can trigger an outsized reaction. Net income of $417 million, a 4.7% margin, tells the story of a company choosing to invest aggressively rather than harvest returns — a bet that has historically proven correct, but one that requires patient capital to hold through moments like this.
