Mercado Libre Falls 5.8% Premarket as Heavy Investment Pressures Margins Despite 45% Revenue Growth
Mercado Libre (NASDAQ: MELI) shares fell about 5.8% in premarket trading despite reporting third-quarter revenue of $10.75 billion, up 45% year over year.
Commerce remained strong, with gross merchandise volume rising 33% on an FX-neutral basis to about $23 billion and items sold increasing 36%. Advertising revenue grew 58% in U.S. dollars, while Mercado Pago monthly active users rose 29% to approximately 93 million.
Fintech growth also remained robust. Mercado Pago revenue increased 42% to $4.6 billion, assets under management rose 67% to $25 billion, and the credit portfolio expanded 62% to $17.9 billion.
However, profitability appears to be the main source of investor concern. Operating income was $676 million, with a 6.3% margin that declined slightly sequentially as Mercado Libre increased spending on fulfillment capacity, free shipping and marketing.
The company expanded fulfillment capacity by nearly 20% quarter over quarter ahead of peak season, while also investing heavily in customer acquisition and engagement, particularly in Brazil.
The 5.8% premarket decline appears to reflect concern that strong top-line growth is requiring increasingly heavy investment, limiting near-term margin expansion. While commerce, fintech and advertising continue to grow rapidly, investors may be focusing on whether Mercado Libre can convert that scale into stronger operating leverage.
