BioNTech Stock Falls 4.9% as BMO Capital Downgrades Shares and Cuts Price Target

BioNTech (NASDAQ: BNTX) shares fell 4.9% Tuesday after BMO Capital Markets downgraded the biotechnology company and significantly reduced its price target.

BMO Capital downgraded BioNTech from Outperform to Market Perform and cut its price target to $105 from $128.

BioNTech shares were trading around $98.69, leaving the new $105 target only about 6% above the current market price. By comparison, the previous $128 target represented substantially greater upside.

The downgrade marks a notable shift in BMO’s view of the stock. Moving from Outperform to Market Perform indicates reduced expectations for BioNTech to outperform the broader market, while the $23 reduction in the price target further reflects the analyst’s more cautious assessment.

With BNTX shares down nearly 5% following the rating action, investors will be watching the company’s oncology pipeline and other clinical developments for potential catalysts that could improve its longer-term growth outlook.
Pfizer and BioNTech Win FDA Approval for Updated XFG COVID-19 Vaccine

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) and BioNTech (NASDAQ: BNTX) received U.S. FDA approval for their updated 2026–2027 COMIRNATY COVID-19 vaccine targeting the XFG variant.

The updated vaccine is approved for adults aged 65 and older and for people aged 5 to 64 who have at least one underlying condition that increases their risk of severe COVID-19. The XFG formulation follows FDA guidance aimed at more closely matching currently circulating variants.

According to the companies, supporting data showed strong immune responses against several circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants, including XFG, XFG.1.1, NB.1.8.1, PQ.17 and PQ.2.8.1. Pfizer and BioNTech said shipments will begin immediately, with the vaccine expected to reach U.S. pharmacies, hospitals and clinics within days.

The approval is commercially positive for both companies because it keeps their COVID-19 vaccine franchise positioned for the upcoming U.S. vaccination season. However, the financial impact will ultimately depend on vaccination rates and demand for updated COVID-19 shots.
BioNTech and Moderna: Two mRNA Giants Chart Different Paths as COVID Revenue Fades

May 6, 2026 · Earnings Analysis

The two companies that changed the world with their mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are now deep into a painful reinvention. BioNTech and Moderna both reported first quarter 2026 results within days of each other, and while the headline numbers tell a familiar story of declining vaccine revenues and widening losses, a closer look reveals two very different bets on what comes next.

BioNTech posted Q1 revenues of €118.1 million, down from €182.8 million a year ago, with net loss widening to €531.9 million. Moderna reported $389 million in revenue, up significantly from the prior year but heavily supported by international government deliveries. Moderna's net loss of $1.3 billion was inflated by a $0.9 billion one-time litigation charge, making its underlying trajectory somewhat less alarming than the headline implies. BioNTech ended the quarter with €16.8 billion in cash while Moderna held $7.5 billion.

Where the two companies diverge most sharply is strategy. BioNTech has made oncology its singular focus, pouring resources into pumitamig, gotistobart, and a growing antibody-drug conjugate portfolio, with six late-stage data readouts expected in 2026. Moderna is playing a broader game, advancing infectious disease vaccines including the world's first approved flu plus COVID combination product, while also pursuing oncology and rare disease therapeutics. Its personalized cancer vaccine intismeran, developed with Merck, will present five-year melanoma data at ASCO in June.

BioNTech is also navigating a manufacturing restructuring affecting 1,860 jobs and the planned departure of its co-founders by end of 2026. Moderna, by contrast, is cutting costs aggressively, with R&D spending down 24% year-over-year.

Both are burning cash to fund their futures. BioNTech is going deep and narrow on cancer. Moderna is going wide across multiple disease areas. Which approach pays off will likely become clearer before the year is out.
BioNTech Extends Losses in Premarket as COVID Revenue Decline Widens Net Loss

May 6, 2026 · Earnings Report

BioNTech shares fell 2.66% in premarket trading today, extending a 3.88% decline from the prior session, as the German biotech reported a deepening net loss in the first quarter of 2026 driven by shrinking COVID-19 vaccine revenues.

First quarter revenues came in at €118.1 million, down from €182.8 million a year ago, with net loss widening to €531.9 million from €415.8 million in Q1 2025. Diluted loss per share was €2.10 compared to €1.73 a year ago. Despite the losses, BioNTech maintained a strong cash position of €16.8 billion and announced a share repurchase program of up to $1.0 billion over the next twelve months.

Alongside the results, BioNTech announced plans to exit manufacturing sites in Idar-Oberstein, Marburg, Singapore and CureVac facilities, affecting approximately 1,860 positions. The restructuring is expected to generate around €500 million in annual recurring savings once fully implemented in 2029. The company also confirmed that co-founders Prof. Ugur Sahin and Prof. Ozlem Tureci will transition out by end of 2026 to lead a new independent mRNA company, with a successor search now underway.

On the pipeline front, five additional pivotal trials for cancer drug pumitamig were initiated during the quarter, with key data readouts expected throughout 2026. BioNTech reaffirmed its full year revenue guidance of €2.0 billion to €2.3 billion.
BioNTech to Report First Quarter 2026 Financial Results and Corporate Update on May 5, 2026
BioNTech announced positive Phase 2 trial results for its experimental cancer therapy trastuzumab pamirtecan, developed in partnership with DualityBio, showing promising efficacy in patients with advanced, HER2-expressing endometrial cancer.

In the study, the antibody-drug conjugate achieved a confirmed objective response rate of approximately 48% among evaluable patients, with median progression-free survival of about 8 months. The treatment demonstrated consistent antitumor activity across all HER2 expression levels, including patients previously treated with checkpoint inhibitors.

The trial, involving 145 heavily pre-treated patients, also showed a manageable safety profile, with most adverse effects being low-grade and consistent with similar therapies.

The results, presented at the 2026 Society of Gynecologic Oncology Annual Meeting, highlight the drug’s potential to address a significant unmet need in endometrial cancer, where current treatment options remain limited.

BioNTech plans to advance the therapy into ongoing Phase 3 trials and is targeting a regulatory filing in 2026, subject to feedback from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
BioNTech announced new clinical data from its late-stage lung cancer portfolio to be presented at ELCC 2026, highlighting progress across multiple therapeutic approaches.

Updated results for pumitamig, a bispecific immunomodulator, reinforced its efficacy and safety profile, while Phase 3 data for gotistobart showed meaningful survival benefits compared to standard treatments in advanced lung cancer.

The company also emphasized advances in antibody-drug conjugates and mRNA-based therapies, supporting its strategy to develop differentiated, combination-driven treatments across all stages of lung cancer.
BioNTech reported full-year 2025 revenue of €2.9 billion and a net loss of €1.1 billion while maintaining a strong financial position with €17.2 billion in cash and investments. The company expects 2026 revenue of €2.0–€2.3 billion and plans significant R&D spending as it advances its oncology pipeline, including immunomodulators, antibody-drug conjugates and mRNA cancer therapies. BioNTech anticipates a catalyst-rich year in 2026 with six late-stage clinical data readouts and continued progress toward its goal of becoming a multi-product biopharmaceutical company by 2030.
