Spotify Jumps 9% as Subscriber Growth, Margin Expansion and Profit Beat Expectations

Spotify (NYSE: SPOT) shares rose about 9% after the company reported strong third-quarter 2026 growth across subscribers, users, revenue and profitability, with both gross margin and operating income coming in ahead of expectations.

Premium subscribers increased 9% year over year to 306 million, while monthly active users rose 11% to 788 million. Spotify said growth was broad-based across every region.

Revenue increased 16% year over year to €5.0 billion, or 14% on a constant-currency basis. Profitability also improved materially, with gross margin expanding 136 basis points to 33.0%.

Operating income reached €672 million, underscoring the company’s progress in converting user and revenue growth into stronger earnings as cost growth moderates.

Management also highlighted continued expansion beyond music. Spotify plans to increase audiobook availability from 22 markets to more than 180 by year-end, while expanding the Spotify Partner Program to more than 35 additional markets and rolling out Creator Memberships across 34 markets.

The company also continues to invest in personalization and engagement, including Taste Profile, managed family accounts and new creator tools. Management said stronger engagement across music, podcasts and books is helping Spotify attract new users and deepen usage among existing listeners.

The 9% gain appears to reflect the combination of healthy subscriber growth, double-digit revenue expansion, better-than-expected margins and operating profit, and increasing confidence that Spotify can sustain growth while continuing to improve profitability.
Spotify Stock Rises 2% as Premium Subscribers Reach 300 Million and Margins Hit Record High

Spotify (NYSE: SPOT) shares gained 2% on Tuesday after the music streaming leader reported strong second-quarter results, highlighted by record profitability, accelerating revenue growth and a major milestone of reaching 300 million Premium subscribers for the first time.

Second-quarter revenue increased 14% year over year to €4.8 billion, while operating income reached €655 million. Gross margin expanded nearly 193 basis points to a record 33.4%, reflecting continued improvements in operating efficiency and the scalability of Spotify's platform.

Premium Subscriber and User Growth Remain Strong

Spotify continued to expand its global user base during the quarter.

Premium subscribers increased 9% year over year to 300 million, marking the first time the company has reached the milestone. Monthly Active Users (MAUs) climbed 12% to 777 million, demonstrating continued engagement across both paid and ad-supported users.

Management said the combination of growing scale and improving profitability reinforces Spotify's long-term growth strategy.

AI and Product Innovation Continue to Expand the Platform

The company introduced several new AI-powered features designed to improve user engagement and personalization.

Spotify expanded its AI-powered DJ to additional languages and markets, launched Personal Podcasts and Studio by Spotify Labs, introduced conversational voice interactions within the app, and unveiled Running Mode, a personalized listening experience tailored for workouts.

The company also continued investing in audiobooks through new Audiobooks+ subscription options and expanded long-form magazine articles in audio format.

Creator Ecosystem and Fan Engagement Grow

Spotify also strengthened its creator and fan ecosystem during the quarter.

The company expanded its Reserved concert ticket program with Live Nation, hosted exclusive live events for artists, and celebrated its 20th anniversary with an in-app personalized music history experience that attracted nearly 100 million users within six days and helped generate the company's largest single day of new subscriber additions.

What to Watch

Investors welcomed another quarter of accelerating subscriber growth and record profitability. Going forward, markets will closely monitor Spotify's ability to monetize its growing user base, expand AI-powered experiences, grow its podcast and audiobook businesses, and sustain margin expansion while continuing to invest in long-term platform innovation.
Spotify shares fall despite solid Q1 results on weak outlook

Shares of Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) declined sharply following the earnings release, as investors focused on weaker forward guidance despite strong first-quarter performance.

The Spotify Technology SA reported solid Q1 results, with revenue rising to €4.5 billion, monthly active users increasing 12% to 761 million, and premium subscribers growing 9% to 293 million. Gross margin improved to 33%, and operating income reached €715 million.

However, the stock dropped after the company issued a softer outlook. According to Reuters, Spotify forecast second-quarter operating income of €630 million, below market expectations, citing higher spending on AI, marketing, and slower growth in key regions like Europe and North America. Shares fell around 11%–14% as investors reacted to weaker subscriber growth expectations and a more cautious near-term outlook, overshadowing the strong Q1 results. (Investors)

Overall, the decline in Spotify’s stock reflects concerns about future profitability and growth momentum rather than current performance, as the company continues to invest heavily in innovation and platform expansion.
