Spotify Jumps 9% as Subscriber Growth, Margin Expansion and Profit Beat Expectations
Spotify (NYSE: SPOT) shares rose about 9% after the company reported strong third-quarter 2026 growth across subscribers, users, revenue and profitability, with both gross margin and operating income coming in ahead of expectations.
Premium subscribers increased 9% year over year to 306 million, while monthly active users rose 11% to 788 million. Spotify said growth was broad-based across every region.
Revenue increased 16% year over year to €5.0 billion, or 14% on a constant-currency basis. Profitability also improved materially, with gross margin expanding 136 basis points to 33.0%.
Operating income reached €672 million, underscoring the company’s progress in converting user and revenue growth into stronger earnings as cost growth moderates.
Management also highlighted continued expansion beyond music. Spotify plans to increase audiobook availability from 22 markets to more than 180 by year-end, while expanding the Spotify Partner Program to more than 35 additional markets and rolling out Creator Memberships across 34 markets.
The company also continues to invest in personalization and engagement, including Taste Profile, managed family accounts and new creator tools. Management said stronger engagement across music, podcasts and books is helping Spotify attract new users and deepen usage among existing listeners.
The 9% gain appears to reflect the combination of healthy subscriber growth, double-digit revenue expansion, better-than-expected margins and operating profit, and increasing confidence that Spotify can sustain growth while continuing to improve profitability.
