Norfolk Southern Rises 1.8% as Record Revenue and Higher EPS Offset Margin Pressure

Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) shares rose about 1.8% after the railroad reported record third-quarter 2026 revenue and solid earnings growth, supported by higher volumes, pricing and fuel surcharges.

Railway operating revenue increased 14% year over year to a record $3.5 billion. Volume rose 3%, while higher fuel surcharges accounted for roughly eight percentage points of the revenue growth.

Income from railway operations increased 5% to $1.2 billion. Diluted EPS rose 7% to $3.37, while adjusted EPS increased 10% to $3.62 after excluding merger-related expenses and the effects of the Eastern Ohio incident.

The main weak point was operating efficiency. The reported operating ratio worsened to 67.4% from 64.6% a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, the ratio was 65.4%, up 210 basis points from the prior-year period, indicating higher costs relative to revenue despite productivity improvements.

Management said demand for rail service strengthened during the quarter as a tighter trucking market improved rail’s competitive position. The company also cited continued network productivity gains and disciplined cost control, although rising fuel costs remained a headwind.

The 1.8% gain appears to reflect investor focus on record revenue, stronger volumes and double-digit adjusted EPS growth, partially offset by deterioration in the operating ratio and continued cost pressure.
Norfolk Southern reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of $3.0 billion, broadly flat year-on-year, as a 1% decline in volumes offset modest pricing gains.

Income from railway operations fell 23% to $877 million, while diluted earnings per share declined 27% to $2.43. On an adjusted basis, excluding merger-related costs and the Eastern Ohio incident, operating income was $939 million and earnings per share reached $2.65.

The company’s operating ratio rose to 70.7%, reflecting higher costs, though management highlighted disciplined execution on safety, service, and cost control amid challenging conditions, including severe weather and rising fuel prices.
Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) announced a quarterly dividend of $1.35 per share on its common stock.

Norfolk Southern Corporation reported fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 results, highlighting meaningful safety and service improvements alongside productivity gains that more than offset a challenging demand environment.

In the fourth quarter, revenue totaled $3.0 billion, down 2% year over year due to a 4% decline in volumes. On an adjusted basis, excluding merger-related expenses and impacts from the Eastern Ohio incident, income from railway operations was $1.0 billion, the operating ratio was 65.3%, and adjusted diluted EPS rose 6% year over year to $3.22.

Norfolk Southern said it has launched East Edge, a new double-stack intermodal rail corridor connecting Chicago and New England, following a $64 million infrastructure investment. The company said the new route cuts transit times by up to 10 hours, replaces a slower single-stack service, and significantly expands freight capacity into the Northeast, one of the most constrained rail markets in the U.S.

The East Edge corridor enables fully double-stacked 9,000-foot trains to reach the Ayer, Massachusetts intermodal terminal, sharply increasing potential container volumes and supporting long-term growth in e-commerce and distribution traffic. Norfolk Southern said the project reflects decades of network modernization and will improve supply chain resilience while creating additional capacity for autos, bulk and merchandise freight across the region.
