MPLX Rises 0.8% as Higher Distribution and EBITDA Growth Support Shares

MPLX (NYSE: MPLX) shares rose about 0.8% after the midstream operator reported higher adjusted EBITDA, solid cash generation and a 12.5% increase in its quarterly distribution.

Third-quarter net income attributable to MPLX was $1.16 billion, down from $1.55 billion a year earlier. However, adjusted EBITDA increased 5.3% to $1.86 billion, despite higher incentive compensation expenses that reduced reported EBITDA growth.

Crude Oil and Products Logistics adjusted EBITDA increased to $1.20 billion from $1.14 billion, while Natural Gas and NGL Services adjusted EBITDA rose to $655 million from $629 million.

Cash generation remained strong. MPLX produced $1.48 billion of operating cash flow and $1.54 billion of distributable cash flow during the quarter, supporting $1.1 billion of capital returns. Adjusted free cash flow was $447 million.

The partnership increased its quarterly distribution by 12.5% to $1.2111 per unit, equivalent to $4.84 annually. Distribution coverage remained at 1.3x, while leverage increased slightly to 3.8x from 3.7x a year earlier.

MPLX also continued expanding its natural gas and NGL infrastructure footprint, including the startup of the Harmon Creek III processing plant and ongoing expansion of its Permian sour gas treating assets.

The 0.8% gain appears to reflect investor focus on rising adjusted EBITDA, durable distributable cash flow and another double-digit distribution increase. The decline in GAAP net income and modestly higher leverage provided some offset, but the underlying cash flow profile remained supportive.
