Chipotle Reaches 1,500 Chipotlanes as Drive-Thru Format Remains Central to Expansion

Chipotle Mexican Grill has opened its 1,500th Chipotlane, marking another milestone in the company’s North American growth strategy and the continued expansion of its digital-order pickup format.

The milestone location opened in Bradenton, Florida. Chipotle has added 500 Chipotlanes in less than two years and continues to make the format a core part of new restaurant development.

Chipotlanes allow customers to pick up digital orders without leaving their vehicles. The company said the format has consistently generated higher sales volumes and returns than traditional restaurants, making it the preferred design for new locations.

Chipotle opened 334 company-owned restaurants last year, including 257 with a Chipotlane. For 2026, the company expects to open 350 to 370 new restaurants as it works toward its long-term goal of reaching 7,000 locations across the U.S. and Canada.

Florida remains an important growth market. Chipotle expects to expand its restaurant footprint in the state by approximately 17% this year and create roughly 1,500 restaurant jobs.

The 1,500th Chipotlane location also incorporates Chipotle’s newer Habanero restaurant design and High-Efficiency Equipment Package, reflecting the company’s broader push to improve restaurant efficiency while expanding its physical footprint.
Chipotle Opens First Asian Restaurant in Seoul, Setting Stage for Regional Expansion

Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) has opened its first restaurant in Asia, launching a location in Seoul, South Korea, as the restaurant chain begins a broader push into the Asian market. The restaurant is located in Seoul’s Gangnam area and is being operated through a joint venture with South Korea’s Sangmidang Holdings.

South Korea will serve as a reference market for Chipotle’s future expansion across Asia, giving the company a model for entering new countries while maintaining its sourcing, food preparation and operating standards. Chipotle selected the country because of its sophisticated restaurant market and consumer demand for authenticity and ingredient quality.

The Seoul restaurant offers Chipotle’s core menu of customizable burritos, bowls, tacos, quesadillas and salads. Sangmidang will contribute its local restaurant and operating expertise, while Chipotle provides its culinary model and brand standards.

The opening is only the first stage of the company’s Asian expansion. Chipotle plans to open two additional South Korean restaurants by the end of 2026, followed by its first Singapore location in 2027. The company is also exploring further international expansion opportunities through outside partnerships.

Asia could become an important new growth avenue for Chipotle as the company looks beyond its core North American market. Chipotle operated more than 4,200 restaurants as of June 30, with locations across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Germany and the Middle East before its South Korean launch.

The Seoul opening therefore represents more than a single restaurant launch: it marks Chipotle’s entry into a major new geographic market and establishes the operational framework the company intends to use as it builds a broader presence across Asia.
Chipotle Stock Falls 4.8% Premarket Despite Raising Full-Year Sales Outlook

Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) shares fell 4.8% in premarket trading on Thursday despite the company raising its full-year comparable sales guidance, as investors focused on margin pressure and flat earnings amid rising operating costs.

Second-quarter revenue increased 9.3% year-over-year to $3.3 billion, driven by new restaurant openings and a 2.2% increase in comparable restaurant sales. The comparable sales gain reflected a 1.2% increase in average check and a 1.0% increase in customer transactions, marking the second consecutive quarter of improving transaction growth.

Margin Pressure Offsets Sales Momentum

While sales trends improved, profitability came under pressure. Operating margin declined to 15.7% from 18.2% a year earlier, while restaurant-level operating margin fell to 25.2% from 27.4%. Diluted earnings per share remained unchanged at $0.32.

Higher costs for beef, freight, wages, bonuses and restaurant labor weighed on margins, partially offset by menu price increases and lower avocado and dairy costs. Digital sales continued to grow, accounting for 38.3% of food and beverage revenue, up from 35.5% a year ago.

Company Raises Full-Year Outlook

Despite the margin headwinds, management raised its full-year comparable restaurant sales guidance to the low single-digit range, citing improving customer traffic and continued momentum from its "Recipe for Growth" strategy. Chipotle also reaffirmed plans to open 350 to 370 new restaurants in 2026, with roughly 80% featuring a Chipotlane drive-thru format.

The company repurchased approximately $631 million of stock during the quarter and ended June with $1.7 billion remaining under its share repurchase authorization.

What to Watch

The post-earnings decline suggests investors remain focused on profitability rather than sales growth. Going forward, the market will watch whether Chipotle can sustain improving customer traffic while easing food and labor cost pressures, allowing margin expansion to resume alongside its aggressive restaurant expansion strategy.
Chipotle Mexican Grill reported first-quarter 2026 results showing solid revenue growth but margin pressure and declining earnings.

Revenue increased 7.4% year-over-year to $3.1 billion, supported by new restaurant openings and a modest 0.5% rise in comparable sales. Transaction growth (+0.6%) helped offset a slight decline in average ticket size. Digital sales remained strong, accounting for 38.6% of total revenue.

However, profitability weakened. Operating margin fell to 12.9% from 16.7%, while adjusted restaurant-level margin declined to 23.7%. Diluted EPS dropped to $0.23, down from $0.28 a year earlier, reflecting higher costs and margin compression.

Cost pressures were driven by inflation in beef, freight, and wages, along with higher labor and operating expenses. Despite this, the company continued expanding, opening 49 new locations during the quarter, most featuring Chipotlane drive-thru formats.

Looking ahead, Chipotle expects full-year comparable sales to remain roughly flat and plans to open 350–370 new restaurants in 2026.
