Medtronic Invests $700 Million in Cornerstone Robotics to Expand Surgical Robot Portfolio

Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) announced Tuesday a strategic partnership with Cornerstone Robotics, investing approximately $700 million to expand its presence in the rapidly growing robotic-assisted surgery market.

The agreement gives Medtronic rights to distribute Cornerstone’s Sentire surgical system in select markets outside the U.S. where the platform has regulatory approval. Medtronic plans to offer Sentire alongside its existing Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system, creating a two-platform portfolio aimed at different clinical, operational and economic requirements.

Sentire received CE Mark in May 2026 for minimally invasive general, gynecologic, thoracic and urologic procedures and is also approved in China and Singapore. The system features an immersive console and dual-console capability.

The investment strengthens one of Medtronic’s key long-term growth opportunities. Global penetration of robotic-assisted surgery remains in the single digits, leaving substantial room for hospitals to transition from conventional procedures toward robotic systems.

Medtronic also highlighted accelerating adoption of Hugo, which is now used in more than 35 countries across six continents and received U.S. FDA clearance within the past year. Hugo procedure volumes are currently growing at more than twice the overall robotic surgery market rate, with cumulative procedures expected to exceed 50,000 globally by the end of Medtronic’s fiscal year.

The Cornerstone partnership gives Medtronic a broader offering as it competes in a surgical robotics market dominated by Intuitive Surgical. Combined with continued investment in Hugo, AI, digital surgery, integrated stapling and new instruments, the Sentire deal could strengthen Medtronic’s ability to capture a larger share of the expanding global robotic surgery market.
Medtronic Stock Rises 1.5% After Strong Q1 Results and Raised FY2027 Guidance

Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) shares rose about 1.5% after the medical-device company reported strong fiscal first-quarter results and raised its full-year revenue and earnings outlook.

Revenue reached $9.76 billion, increasing 13.7% both reported and organically and coming roughly 200 basis points above the midpoint of the company’s guidance. Adjusted EPS rose 15.1% to $1.45, also ahead of Medtronic’s expectations. The quarter benefited from an extra fiscal week, which contributed approximately $570 million to revenue.

Growth was broad-based across Medtronic’s portfolio. Cardiovascular revenue increased 18.9% organically, including 88% growth in Cardiac Ablation Solutions, while Neuroscience grew 9.3%. Medical Surgical increased 10.2%, and the Diabetes business delivered 14.9% organic growth.

Profitability also improved. GAAP operating profit increased 22.1% to $1.76 billion, while GAAP net income jumped 41.4% to $1.47 billion. Adjusted operating profit rose 14.9% to $2.32 billion.

The likely key driver behind the positive stock reaction was Medtronic’s stronger outlook. The company raised its FY2027 organic revenue growth forecast to 7.25%-7.75% from 6.75%-7.25% and increased the lower end of its adjusted EPS guidance, with the new range at $5.94-$6.00 compared with $5.90-$6.00 previously.

Medtronic’s results also highlight strength in several faster-growing medical technology markets, particularly cardiac ablation, diabetes technology and robotic-assisted surgery. Continued growth from these newer platforms alongside the company’s established cardiovascular and neuroscience franchises could support a stronger long-term growth profile.
# Medtronic Expands European Approval for Affera System to Treat Ventricular Arrhythmias

Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) announced an expanded CE Mark indication for its Affera Mapping and Ablation System with the Sphere-9 Catheter, allowing the technology to be used in Europe to treat ventricular arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia and premature ventricular complexes.

The expanded indication opens another potential growth market for Medtronic's cardiac ablation business as the company continues the global rollout of its Sphere-9 technology.

## Sphere-9 Gains First-of-Its-Kind CE Mark

According to Medtronic, Sphere-9 is the first all-in-one mapping and ablation, large-tip focal, dual-energy catheter to receive CE Mark authorization for ventricular ablation.

The system combines high-definition cardiac mapping with both pulsed field and radiofrequency ablation in a single catheter. This allows physicians to map abnormal electrical activity and select between the two energy sources during cardiac ablation procedures.

Medtronic said the technology could address an important unmet need in ventricular arrhythmias, where treatment options include medications, implanted defibrillators and catheter ablation.

## U.S. Clinical Trial Underway

Medtronic is also working toward expanding Sphere-9's ventricular indication in the United States.

The FDA has granted the catheter Breakthrough Device Designation for treating ventricular arrhythmias, providing an expedited regulatory pathway for the technology.

Enrollment is now underway in the Sphere VT pivotal trial, which will evaluate Sphere-9 for ventricular tachycardia and is intended to support a potential future U.S. approval.

The expanded European indication adds to Medtronic's broader push into next-generation electrophysiology. For the company, extending Sphere-9 beyond its existing applications could expand the addressable market for the Affera platform while strengthening its position in the growing cardiac ablation market.
Medtronic (MDT) rose about 5% after delivering a strong earnings report that exceeded expectations, posted its fastest annual revenue growth in a decade, and issued better-than-expected fiscal 2027 guidance.

The medical device giant reported fourth-quarter revenue of $9.8 billion, up 9.9% year-over-year, while non-GAAP EPS came in at $1.55, ahead of management's guidance. The company benefited from broad-based strength across its portfolio, particularly in cardiovascular devices, diabetes care, and surgical products. One standout was Cardiac Ablation Solutions, where revenue surged 78% globally and 124% in the United States as Medtronic continued gaining market share.

Investors were particularly encouraged by the company's outlook. Medtronic expects fiscal 2027 organic revenue growth of 6.75% to 7.25% and non-GAAP EPS of $5.90 to $6.00, implying earnings growth of roughly 7% to 9%. The guidance suggests management expects its growth momentum to continue despite tariffs and other macroeconomic headwinds.

The company also highlighted several growth drivers, including its Affera cardiac ablation platform, Hugo robotic surgery system, Symplicity renal denervation technology, and Stealth AXiS surgical navigation platform. Recent acquisitions and investments in areas such as coronary intervention, neurovascular devices, neuromodulation, and cardiovascular technologies further reinforced confidence in future growth prospects.

Another positive factor for income-focused investors was Medtronic's announcement of its 49th consecutive annual dividend increase, raising the annual dividend to $2.88 per share. The company generated $7.3 billion of operating cash flow during fiscal 2026 and ended the year with $9.2 billion in cash and investments, highlighting its strong financial position.

Overall, investors appear to be rewarding Medtronic for delivering accelerating revenue growth, strong execution in key product categories, a healthy pipeline of new technologies, and an upbeat outlook for fiscal 2027. The combination of earnings upside, guidance growth, market-share gains, and dividend increases explains the stock's strong move higher following the results.
