Gold and Bitcoin Rally as Democratic Midterm Sweep Reshapes U.S. Market Outlook

Gold and Bitcoin moved sharply higher on Wednesday while market volatility declined as investors digested a sweeping Democratic victory in the U.S. midterm elections that handed the party control of both the House and Senate.

Democrats captured both chambers of Congress in the November 3 elections, creating a divided government with Republican President Donald Trump and raising expectations that parts of the administration’s legislative agenda could face greater resistance during the second half of his term.

Gold futures jumped 2.9% to about $4,055 an ounce in early trading, rebounding strongly above the $4,000 level. The move coincided with a weaker U.S. dollar and a post-election rally in Treasuries. The move is particularly notable because gold had struggled as a traditional safe haven in the weeks leading into the election. The post-election rebound suggests that falling yields, dollar weakness and renewed political uncertainty may be providing support for the non-yielding metal.

Bitcoin also recovered strongly, rising 1.6% to around $78,200 after briefly falling below $76,000 overnight. The rebound came as broader risk sentiment stabilized following the election result. Lower interest-rate expectations can provide support for speculative assets such as cryptocurrencies, although Bitcoin has also been dealing with crypto-specific volatility following recent market disruptions.

Treasury markets showed an important shift around the election. The 10-year yield had closed November 3 at about 4.95%, up 1.2% on the day, but yields subsequently moved lower as investors assessed the implications of Democratic congressional control.

Meanwhile, the CBOE Volatility Index fell 8.2% to 19.13. The decline in the VIX suggests that the removal of election uncertainty outweighed immediate concerns about political confrontation in Washington.

The market response therefore presents an unusual combination: gold is benefiting from lower yields and political uncertainty, Bitcoin is rebounding alongside improving risk appetite, and volatility is declining as investors gain greater clarity over the political landscape.

The Democratic sweep could still create significant sector-level consequences. With Congress now positioned to challenge Trump administration policies and increase oversight, markets are likely to focus increasingly on fiscal spending, tariffs, energy policy and regulation of the rapidly expanding AI and data-center industries.
