U.S. Jobless Claims Fall to 189,000 as Tech Stocks Slide

U.S. initial jobless claims fell to 189,000, below the 197,000 forecast and down from 195,000 previously, pointing to continued resilience in the labor market.

Continuing jobless claims, however, increased to 1.718 million from 1.695 million, slightly above the 1.710 million forecast. The combination suggests layoffs remain low, while workers already unemployed may be taking somewhat longer to find new jobs.

U.S. equities traded mixed following the data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 0.54%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.32% and the Nasdaq declined 1.12%.

The stronger initial claims reading may reinforce expectations that the labor market remains relatively firm, potentially limiting the case for faster monetary easing. The heavier decline in the Nasdaq suggests rate-sensitive technology stocks were under greater pressure, while the Dow showed relative strength.
