IBM Unveils Most Advanced Quantum System in Illinois as Chicago Quantum Hub Expands
IBM (NYSE: IBM) unveiled its first quantum computer in Illinois, deploying an IBM Quantum System Two at the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park Labs as part of the state’s expanding quantum technology ecosystem.
The system is powered by IBM Quantum Nighthawk, which IBM describes as its most powerful quantum chip to date. It will initially operate at Hyde Park Labs before eventually moving to the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, where it will anchor the National Quantum Algorithm Center.
IBM said the system will support research and commercial development across areas including drug discovery, power-grid optimization, high-energy physics and distributed quantum computing. Current collaborations involve organizations such as Deloitte, AbbVie, EPRI, Fermilab, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The deployment also deepens IBM’s strategic presence in Chicago. The company previously announced plans for a FutureNow Chicago center at the quantum park, expected to support 750 jobs across AI, cybersecurity, data science and quantum computing.
For IBM, the installation strengthens its leadership position in quantum infrastructure while expanding the ecosystem around real-world quantum applications and enterprise research partnerships.
