U.S. Consumer Sentiment Improves in November as Inflation Expectations Ease

U.S. consumer sentiment improved more than expected in November, while both short- and long-term inflation expectations declined.

The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index rose to 51.0 from 48.0, beating the 48.1 forecast. Consumer expectations also improved to 50.9 from 48.8, above expectations of 49.5.

One-year inflation expectations fell to 4.3% from 4.7%, below the 4.6% forecast. Five-year inflation expectations eased to 3.4% from 3.5%, also slightly better than expected.

The combination of stronger sentiment and softer inflation expectations is broadly constructive, suggesting consumers became somewhat less pessimistic while inflation concerns moderated. For monetary policy, the decline in inflation expectations partly offsets the earlier strength in payrolls and wages, leaving the Federal Reserve with mixed signals on the inflation outlook.
