U.S. Payrolls Surge by 165,000 in October as Unemployment Falls to 4.1%
U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 165,000 in October, far above the 65,000 forecast and up from 60,000 previously, signaling substantially stronger-than-expected job creation.
The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, compared with expectations for it to remain at 4.2%.
Average hourly earnings also came in stronger than expected, rising 0.4% month over month versus the 0.3% forecast and previous increase.
Taken together, the data point to a resilient labor market with stronger hiring, lower unemployment and firm wage growth. The report could reduce expectations for near-term Federal Reserve rate cuts, as persistent labor-market strength and wage pressures may keep inflation risks elevated.
