Yum! Brands Edges Up 0.4% as KFC Growth and Pizza Hut Divestiture Support Outlook
Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) shares rose about 0.4% after the company reported third-quarter 2026 results highlighted by strong KFC expansion, completion of the Pizza Hut divestiture and continued capital returns.
Third-quarter GAAP EPS was $5.92, boosted by an approximately $1.7 billion pre-tax gain related to the sale of Pizza Hut. EPS excluding special items was $1.56.
Excluding Pizza Hut, Yum! increased its unit count by 7%, including 955 gross new openings during the quarter. KFC remained the strongest contributor, with system sales up 6%, same-store sales up 1% and unit growth of 7%. KFC core operating profit increased 8%.
Taco Bell delivered a softer quarter, with system sales down 2% and same-store sales down 4%, while core operating profit declined 4%. However, management said Taco Bell U.S. has been outperforming the broader quick-service restaurant industry on same-store sales growth since the end of September.
Digital sales remained an important growth driver, exceeding $9 billion during the quarter and representing 64% of system sales.
Yum! also returned $1.8 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases year to date. Following the completion of the Pizza Hut divestiture, management is focusing the portfolio more heavily on KFC and Taco Bell.
The modest 0.4% gain appears to reflect a mixed operating picture. KFC’s strong development, portfolio simplification and continued shareholder returns were supportive, but weaker Taco Bell same-store sales and only 1% quarterly core operating profit growth excluding Pizza Hut limited the upside.
