German Producer Prices Accelerate as ZEW Signals Mixed Economic Outlook

German producer prices rose 1.9% month over month in September, exceeding the 1.5% consensus estimate and accelerating from a 1.1% increase previously.

The stronger-than-expected PPI reading points to renewed upstream price pressure, which could complicate the inflation outlook if higher producer costs begin feeding through to consumer prices.

Meanwhile, Germany’s ZEW Current Conditions index improved sharply to -35.9 in October from -47.1, substantially better than the -45.0 consensus estimate. Although the index remained negative, the improvement suggests respondents viewed the present economic environment as less weak than previously.

In contrast, ZEW Economic Sentiment fell to 28.1 from 34.7 and missed the 30.2 forecast, indicating that expectations for the months ahead have softened.

Overall, the data present a mixed picture: current conditions improved more than expected, but forward-looking sentiment weakened, while stronger producer-price growth adds a more inflationary element to the outlook.
