Chevron Announces Major Oil and Gas Discovery Offshore Angola

Chevron (NYSE: CVX) announced a significant oil and gas condensate discovery offshore Angola on Monday, strengthening the energy giant’s resource base in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The discovery was made at the 105-4X exploration well in Block 0 in Angola’s Lower Congo Basin. Chevron said the well encountered an oil and gas condensate column exceeding 600 meters, or roughly 2,000 feet, in the primary Pinda reservoir, including more than 90 meters of net pay with what the company described as excellent reservoir quality.

Importantly, Chevron is evaluating the discovery for development as a tie-back to nearby existing infrastructure. Such an approach could provide a more capital-efficient and potentially faster path to production than developing a completely standalone project.

Chevron operates Block 0 through subsidiary Cabinda Gulf Oil Company and holds a 39.2% working interest. Sonangol E&P owns 41%, TotalEnergies holds 10%, and Azule Energy owns the remaining 9.8%.

Discovery Strengthens Chevron’s African Portfolio

The Angola discovery adds to Chevron’s expanding exploration portfolio across Sub-Saharan Africa, where the company currently produces around 300,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day on a net basis. Chevron has also expanded its exploration footprint in Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea and is pursuing additional opportunities offshore Angola.

While Chevron has not yet disclosed estimated recoverable resources from the new discovery, the substantial hydrocarbon column, high-quality reservoir and proximity to existing infrastructure make the find strategically important. Further appraisal will determine its commercial scale and potential contribution to Chevron’s future production.
