Brent Crude Rises as Iran’s Hormuz Demands Renew Supply Concerns

Brent crude prices moved higher on Friday as uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz returned to the center of the oil market. The contract shown was trading around $79.83 per barrel, up roughly 1.3%.

According to Reuters, Iran, working with Oman, has proposed restrictions that would prevent vessels it considers “hostile,” including U.S. and Israeli ships, from using the Strait. The proposal also reportedly includes penalties of up to 20% of cargo value for violations.

Hormuz Uncertainty Restores Risk Premium

The demands have raised doubts that negotiations will quickly restore normal commercial traffic through the crucial waterway. U.S. officials have also indicated that Washington would not accept an arrangement effectively leaving Iran in control of the Strait, according to Al Jazeera.

The Strait of Hormuz normally handles roughly one-fifth of global oil supply, making any restrictions on shipping an immediate concern for energy markets.

For now, Brent is likely to remain highly sensitive to the negotiations. A workable agreement allowing normal tanker traffic could reduce the geopolitical premium, while further restrictions or a breakdown in talks could push supply concerns—and oil prices—higher.
