S&P 500 Trades Lower as Communication Services Weigh on Market

U.S. stocks traded mixed on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 slipping 0.1% in early afternoon trading as weakness in Communication Services and Energy offset gains in Materials, Health Care, and Technology.

The market initially moved lower before recovering part of its losses, as investors continued digesting a busy day of corporate earnings alongside mixed economic data. Earlier in the session, stronger-than-expected S&P Global PMI readings highlighted resilient business activity, while a weaker ADP employment report pointed to a slowing labor market.

Communication Services was the weakest-performing sector, falling more than 3%, likely pressured by post-earnings declines in major media and internet companies. Energy also lagged, down 1.4%, as lower oil prices weighed on the sector.

On the positive side, Materials led the market with a 1.4% gain, followed by Health Care, which rose 1.2% as several pharmaceutical companies posted strong quarterly results. Information Technology also remained in positive territory, supported by continued strength in AI-related companies and solid earnings reports.

Despite the S&P 500 trading slightly lower, market breadth remained relatively balanced as investors rotated into defensive sectors such as Health Care while selectively buying companies that delivered strong earnings and optimistic guidance.

With earnings season in full swing, investors will continue watching corporate results and upcoming labor market data for further clues on the strength of the U.S. economy and the Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook.
