Gold Rises Nearly 1.5% as Softer Inflation Expectations Boost Rate-Cut Hopes

Gold prices climbed nearly 1.5% on Wednesday to around $4,215 per ounce, as investors increased bets that easing inflation pressures and gradually softer U.S. economic data could give central banks more room to reduce interest rates in the coming quarters.

The rally came despite stronger-than-expected U.S. manufacturing activity released earlier this week. The ISM Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.6 in July from 53.3, while the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI held at 53.9, signaling continued resilience in the factory sector.

However, investors focused more on signs that inflation pressures may be moderating. The ISM Prices Paid Index declined to 71.1 from 73.0, while JOLTS job openings fell below expectations to 7.359 million, pointing to a gradually cooling labor market. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow estimate for third-quarter U.S. growth was revised down to 5.9% from 6.2%.

These developments strengthened expectations that inflation could continue easing over the coming months, allowing the Federal Reserve and other major central banks to adopt a more accommodative policy stance. Lower interest rates typically support gold by reducing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.

Markets also drew support from easing geopolitical concerns. While tensions between the United States and Iran remain an important risk factor, recent developments have pointed toward de-escalation rather than further escalation, shifting investor focus back toward inflation trends and the outlook for monetary policy.

What to Watch

Investors will closely monitor upcoming U.S. inflation and labor market data for additional clues on the Federal Reserve's policy path. Any further evidence of moderating inflation or cooling employment conditions could strengthen expectations for lower interest rates and provide further support for gold prices, while comments from major central banks are likely to remain another key catalyst for the precious metals market.
