US Consumer Confidence Falls in July as GDPNow Estimate Edges Lower

U.S. markets digested two softer-than-expected economic updates on Tuesday, with consumer confidence declining more than forecast and the Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow model trimming its estimate for second-quarter economic growth.

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index fell to 90.8 in July, below both the market expectation of 92.4 and June’s reading of 92.2. The weaker-than-expected reading suggests households became more cautious about the economic outlook, as concerns over inflation, labor market conditions, and broader economic uncertainty continued to weigh on sentiment.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow model lowered its estimate for second-quarter U.S. GDP growth to 1.5%, down from 1.6% previously and slightly below economists’ expectations. While the revision was modest, it points to a somewhat softer pace of economic expansion heading into the second half of the year.
