S&P 500 Sector Performance Today: Communication Services Lead While Technology and Energy Weigh on the Market

The S&P 500 traded little changed on Monday, edging up just 0.02% in early afternoon trading as investors rotated between sectors ahead of a busy week featuring the Federal Reserve's policy decision, major technology earnings, and key U.S. economic data. Broader market sentiment was supported by easing geopolitical tensions following the pause in hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, although weakness in semiconductors and energy stocks limited gains.

Communication Services emerged as the market's strongest-performing sector, gaining 2.06%. The advance was driven by strength in large-cap names such as Alphabet, while investors also positioned ahead of this week's earnings from several technology and internet giants. Consumer Staples followed with a 1.29% gain, reflecting continued demand for defensive stocks, while Financials (+0.88%) and Health Care (+0.87%) also outperformed as investors favored companies reporting solid quarterly earnings.

Consumer Discretionary added 0.75%, supported by improving risk appetite and lower oil prices, which tend to benefit retailers, travel companies, and other consumer-focused businesses. Materials posted a modest 0.20% gain as commodity markets remained relatively stable.

On the downside, Information Technology was the weakest major sector, falling 1.09%. The decline was largely driven by renewed selling pressure in semiconductor stocks following concerns over China's rapidly advancing domestic chip industry and the blockbuster debut of memory chipmaker CXMT. Nvidia, AMD, ASML and several other chip-related companies remained under pressure despite broader market resilience.

Energy shares dropped 1.61%, making the sector the second-worst performer of the day. The decline followed a sharp fall in crude oil prices after the U.S. and Iran paused hostilities, easing concerns over potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. Lower oil prices weighed on major oil producers while boosting sectors that benefit from reduced fuel costs.

Overall, today's sector performance highlights a market that remains balanced between optimism over easing geopolitical risks and caution surrounding the technology sector. Investors are now turning their attention to this week's Federal Reserve meeting and earnings reports from several mega-cap technology companies, which are likely to determine the market's direction over the coming days.
