L3Harris Uses Commercial Approach to Accelerate Defense Innovation

L3Harris Technologies emphasized its use of a commercial business model to quickly deliver advanced, resilient communications systems to U.S. and allied forces. The company supports the shift toward faster, more flexible defense acquisition strategies as outlined in a recent executive order, which prioritizes commercial solutions in Department of Defense procurement.

For more than 50 years, L3Harris has applied internal research and development to build military-ready technology, most notably the Falcon® radio product line—including AN/PRC-117G, -152, -158, and -163. These software-defined radios meet strict NSA and military standards while enabling fast, affordable deployment and adaptability for evolving threat environments.

President of Communication Systems Sam Mehta stated that their commercial strategy allows L3Harris to anticipate tactical edge requirements and deliver secure, reprogrammable radios to conflict zones on short notice. President of Tactical Communications Chris Aebli noted that the company’s open-system design and real-time customer feedback help future-proof its products.

L3Harris radios are widely used in U.S. and international defense programs, including the Army’s HMS program, the U.K.’s Multi-Mode Radio initiative, and the Netherlands’ FOXTROT program. The commercial model enables same-week turnaround for radio orders and supports operations in some of the world's most contested environments.
