Comcast NBCUniversal announces plans for first Universal theme park and resort in Europe
Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to build a Universal-branded theme park and resort in the United Kingdom, marking the company’s first entertainment complex in Europe. The planned location is near Bedford, about 35 minutes north of London by train.
Designed by Universal Destinations & Experiences, the resort will include a world-class theme park featuring immersive lands, a 500-room hotel, and a retail, dining, and entertainment complex. The proposal is subject to planning approval, with construction expected to begin in 2026.
According to Mike Cavanagh, President of Comcast Corporation, the project represents a milestone as the company expands its global theme park footprint. Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, highlighted the opportunity to engage new fans across Europe.
The 476-acre site was acquired by Comcast in 2023. It benefits from excellent transport links and is within two hours of travel for half of the UK population.
This UK expansion comes as Universal prepares to open multiple projects in the United States, including:
- **Universal Epic Universe** in Orlando, Florida (May 2025)
- **Universal Horror Unleashed** in Las Vegas (late 2025)
- **Universal Kids Resort** in Frisco, Texas (2026)
Comcast has invested over $10 billion in Universal parks across the US since 2018. The UK park is expected to become one of the most visited attractions in Europe.
