Republic Services Launches Earth Month Challenge to Boost Plastic Bottle Recycling
Republic Services is encouraging consumers to recycle plastic water bottles as part of its Earth Month Challenge. Despite the fact that plastic water bottles can be recycled up to six times, only 33% of them are currently recycled in the U.S., meaning nearly 70% end up in landfills.
The company recycles approximately 300 million pounds of plastic annually and plans to invest $500 million in expanding its plastics recycling infrastructure. In 2024, Republic Services recycled over 2.5 billion plastic water bottles.
To raise awareness, the company emphasizes that recyclables should be empty, clean, and dry, with caps kept on. It will also join the Association of Plastic Recyclers in May for a nationwide open house event to show how recyclables are transformed into new products.
