Humana Rises 4.3% as Benefit Ratio Beats Guidance and 2026 EPS Outlook Increases

Humana (NYSE: HUM) shares rose about 4.3% after the company reported a better-than-expected insurance benefit ratio and raised its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings outlook.

Third-quarter GAAP EPS was $1.33, while adjusted results showed a loss of $0.70 per share. The key positive was Humana’s Insurance segment benefit ratio of 93.7%, better than management’s guidance for a ratio slightly above 94%.

Humana raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to at least $9.50 from at least $9.00. GAAP EPS guidance was also increased sharply to at least $15.09, although that figure is heavily influenced by valuation adjustments and other non-operating items.

Operating trends were also supported by continued expansion in CenterWell and Medicaid. CenterWell Senior Primary Care added 146,800 patients year to date, up 30%, while Medicaid membership increased by 103,600, or 7%.

The company also highlighted its new joint venture structure with BlackRock, which it expects to improve balance sheet efficiency, reduce the cost of capital and support future CenterWell growth.

The 4.3% share gain appears to reflect the better-than-expected benefit ratio and higher adjusted EPS guidance, suggesting medical cost trends are tracking more favorably than investors had feared.
