Southern Company Rises 1.2% as Q3 Earnings and Revenue Climb

Southern Company (NYSE: SO) shares rose about 1.2% after the utility reported higher third-quarter earnings and double-digit revenue growth.

Third-quarter earnings increased to $2.0 billion, or $1.77 per share, from $1.7 billion, or $1.55 per share, a year earlier. Excluding certain items, adjusted EPS rose to $1.94 from $1.60.

Operating revenue increased 13% year over year to $8.8 billion, while nine-month revenue rose 7.3% to $24.2 billion.

Southern said adjusted earnings benefited from warmer weather, higher electricity usage, customer growth, stronger demand from large commercial and industrial customers, and higher earnings from Southern Power. These gains were partly offset by higher operating costs, taxes and share dilution.

The 1.2% share gain appears to reflect solid earnings growth and stronger demand across the Southeast, particularly from large commercial and industrial customers.
