Manulife Rises 3% Premarket as Record Core Earnings and Asia Growth Support Shares
Manulife Financial (NYSE: MFC) shares rose about 3% in premarket trading after the company reported record third-quarter core earnings and continued strong growth in Asia.
Core earnings reached C$2.1 billion, up 4% on a constant-exchange-rate basis, while core EPS increased 6% to a record C$1.24. Core return on equity was 17.8%.
Reported net income attributable to shareholders fell to C$1.4 billion from a year earlier, while reported EPS declined 21% to C$0.82.
Asia was the main growth driver, with double-digit core earnings growth, while Manulife also cited solid contributions from its North American insurance businesses.
Global Wealth and Asset Management recorded net outflows of C$3.6 billion, improving from C$6.2 billion of outflows a year earlier.
Capital remained strong, with a LICAT ratio of 136%. Manulife returned C$1.3 billion to shareholders during the quarter while maintaining financial leverage below its medium-term target.
The 3% premarket gain appears to reflect record core profitability, strong Asia momentum and solid capital returns, despite weaker reported net income and continued net outflows in wealth and asset management.
