Suncor Energy Edges Up 0.6% Premarket as Record Cash Flow Supports Higher Dividend and Buybacks
Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU) shares rose about 0.6% in premarket trading after the company reported record quarterly adjusted funds from operations and free funds flow, while increasing both its dividend and share repurchase pace.
Third-quarter adjusted operating earnings climbed to C$4.63 billion, or C$3.97 per share, from C$1.79 billion, or C$1.48 per share, a year earlier. Net earnings increased to C$3.81 billion from C$1.62 billion.
Adjusted funds from operations reached a record C$6.71 billion, up from C$3.83 billion, while free funds flow more than doubled to C$5.20 billion from C$2.35 billion. The improvement was driven by stronger upstream price realizations, higher downstream margins and increased high-value export sales.
Operational performance was also strong. Total upstream production averaged 852,500 barrels per day, while refinery utilization was 95%. Refined product sales reached a third-quarter record of 676,900 barrels per day, supported by higher export capacity and domestic retail volumes.
Suncor returned more than C$2.0 billion to shareholders during the quarter through nearly C$1.4 billion of share repurchases and about C$700 million in dividends. After the quarter, the company increased planned monthly buybacks to C$750 million from C$500 million and raised its quarterly dividend 10% to C$0.66 per share.
The company also agreed to sell its interests in Terra Nova, White Rose and West White Rose for C$1.2 billion, plus a potential contingent payment of up to C$350 million, further simplifying its portfolio and transferring future liabilities associated with the assets.
The modest premarket gain appears to reflect confidence in Suncor’s cash generation and capital-return capacity. Record free funds flow, faster buybacks and a higher dividend provide strong shareholder support, even as total upstream production remained slightly below the prior-year quarter.
