Tradeweb Launches Muni Sweep to Speed Municipal Bond Trading
Tradeweb Markets (NASDAQ: TW) launched Muni Sweep, a new session-based trading protocol designed to help municipal bond market participants evaluate and trade inventory more efficiently.
The workflow concentrates municipal bond inventory into a short, defined trading window. Participants can review opportunities, compare pricing against Tradeweb composite levels and accept relevant interest before the session closes. The company said the process is designed to reduce risk tie-up from hours under traditional bid-wanted workflows to minutes.
The launch comes as electronic trading continues to expand across the municipal bond market. According to data cited by Tradeweb, the market recorded 17.6 million trades in 2025, up 22% year over year, while electronic trading share increased from 16% in 2022 to nearly 21% in the second quarter of 2026.
Tradeweb has also been seeing stronger municipal trading activity on its own platform. Municipal bond average daily volume reached a record level in the third quarter of 2026, with September ADV rising 40% year over year to $729 million.
Muni Sweep allows users to upload inventory with CUSIP, size and an optional yield or price, while Tradeweb supplies composite pricing for comparison. The platform also includes filtering, sorting and Excel import and export functionality to support the review of large inventories.
The protocol extends a session-based trading model Tradeweb already uses across other markets. More than 25 similar sessions currently take place each week across 10 products on the company’s global wholesale platform.
The launch expands Tradeweb’s municipal bond workflow capabilities as dealers increasingly seek faster inventory turnover, greater price transparency and more efficient electronic execution.
