Fiserv Jumps 7% as Cost-Savings Target Doubles and Share Buybacks Resume

Fiserv (NASDAQ: FISV) shares rose about 7% despite weak third-quarter 2026 revenue trends, as investors appeared to focus on a sharply higher cost-savings target, reaffirmed full-year guidance and the planned resumption of share repurchases.

Third-quarter GAAP revenue declined 1% year over year to $5.20 billion, while organic revenue was flat. Merchant Solutions organic revenue fell 2%, while Financial Solutions returned to growth with a 2% increase.

Adjusted EPS was $1.75. GAAP results were heavily affected by a $6.45 billion non-cash goodwill impairment charge, resulting in a GAAP loss of $11.17 per share. The impairment does not represent a current-period cash outflow but highlights the substantial reduction in the carrying value of acquired assets.

Underlying profitability also remained under pressure. Adjusted operating margin declined to 31.2% from 37.0% a year earlier. Free cash flow for the first nine months fell to $2.04 billion from $2.88 billion, while operating cash flow declined to $3.09 billion from $4.12 billion.

The most important positive catalyst was Project Elevate. Fiserv doubled its targeted savings to $1 billion from $500 million after identifying additional efficiencies across its portfolio. Management also said banking client attrition has fallen more than 25% year to date and expects revenue trends to accelerate in the fourth quarter.

Fiserv reaffirmed its 2026 outlook for organic revenue growth of negative 1% to flat and adjusted EPS of $7.20-$7.40. The company also plans to repurchase $500 million of shares during the fourth quarter, earlier than previously anticipated.

The 7% gain appears to reflect improving confidence in the restructuring and turnaround rather than strength in current-quarter growth. With revenue still stagnant and margins below last year, the market reaction suggests investors are placing greater weight on the larger $1 billion efficiency program, stabilizing Financial Solutions trends and the earlier return of capital through buybacks.
