Shopify Plunges 14% Despite 32% Revenue Growth as Q4 Outlook Fails to Clear High Expectations
Shopify (NYSE: SHOP) shares fell about 14% after the company reported strong third-quarter 2026 growth but issued a fourth-quarter outlook that appears to have fallen short of elevated investor expectations.
Third-quarter revenue rose 32% year over year to $3.74 billion, while gross merchandise volume increased to $119.1 billion from $92.0 billion. Monthly recurring revenue also climbed to $230 million from $193 million.
Profitability improved meaningfully. Gross profit increased to $1.78 billion from $1.39 billion, while operating income rose to $568 million from $343 million. Free cash flow jumped to $816 million from $507 million, lifting the free cash flow margin to 22% from 18%.
Despite those strong results, Shopify guided for fourth-quarter revenue growth in the low-30% range, broadly similar to the 32% growth reported in Q3 rather than signaling another acceleration. Gross profit dollars are expected to grow in the high-20% range, while operating expenses are projected at 29%-30% of revenue.
The company also expects fourth-quarter free cash flow margin to be consistent with the year-earlier period, which may have disappointed investors after the third-quarter margin expanded sharply to 22%.
The 14% selloff therefore appears to reflect expectations rather than a deterioration in current operating performance. Shopify continues to post rapid revenue growth, strong GMV expansion and improving cash generation, but the stock reaction suggests investors had been pricing in stronger holiday-quarter acceleration or additional margin expansion. At a high-growth valuation, guidance that is merely strong can still disappoint when expectations are even higher.
