Vertex Pharmaceuticals Edges Up 0.3% Premarket as Revenue Growth and Higher Guidance Offset Acquisition Costs
Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: VRTX) shares rose about 0.3% in premarket trading after the company reported solid third-quarter 2026 revenue growth and raised its full-year sales outlook, while higher expenses tied to the Crinetics acquisition limited the market reaction.
Third-quarter revenue increased 12% year over year to $3.44 billion. U.S. revenue rose 10% to $2.17 billion, supported by continued cystic fibrosis demand, including ALYFTREK uptake, as well as contributions from CASGEVY, JOURNAVX and PALSONIFY. International revenue increased 16% to $1.27 billion.
GAAP net income fell to $654 million from $1.1 billion a year earlier, largely because of costs related to the Crinetics Pharmaceuticals acquisition. Non-GAAP net income remained roughly flat at $1.2 billion as higher product revenue was offset by increased operating expenses, higher interest expense and lower interest income.
Vertex raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $13.15 billion-$13.25 billion from $13.1 billion-$13.2 billion. The outlook includes at least $500 million of combined revenue from CASGEVY and JOURNAVX and $40 million-$50 million from PALSONIFY.
At the same time, expense guidance increased materially. Combined GAAP R&D, acquired IPR&D and SG&A expense guidance rose to $7.15 billion-$7.2 billion from $6.3 billion-$6.45 billion, primarily reflecting Crinetics integration and operating costs. Non-GAAP expense guidance also increased to about $6.0 billion.
The modest 0.3% premarket gain appears to reflect a balance between strong top-line growth, higher revenue guidance and continued portfolio diversification on one side, and acquisition-related costs and rising operating expenses on the other. Investors are also likely watching the November 30 PDUFA date for povetacicept, which could establish renal medicine as Vertex’s next major commercial franchise.
