Aon and SAGE Launch AI-Powered Precision Crop Insurance Program Across 15 States

Aon (NYSE: AON) and agricultural risk-intelligence company SAGE announced a new precision crop insurance program designed to use field-level data and AI to improve risk assessment and insurance pricing for U.S. corn and soybean growers.

The program, developed with specialty agricultural insurer AgriCap, is expected to be available across 15 states for the 2027 crop year. It is designed to complement federal crop insurance by matching coverage more closely to the value and risk characteristics of individual fields rather than relying primarily on county-level averages.

The approach combines SAGE’s AI models, which analyze soil, water, weather and farm-management data, with Aon’s insurance analytics and risk-capital capabilities. The companies said the goal is to convert field-level resilience and risk signals into information that can be used directly in insurance underwriting and capital allocation.

A four-county pilot is already underway in Michigan through the Resilience in Agricultural Lending and Insurance Coalition. The pilot covers more than one million agricultural acres, representing about 12% of the state’s farmland.

The program addresses a limitation in traditional crop insurance, where premiums may not fully capture differences in risk between individual farms or fields. By using more granular data, Aon and SAGE aim to create insurance structures that better reward growers investing in resilience while also helping insurers price risk more precisely.

The initiative expands Aon’s use of AI and advanced analytics within agricultural insurance and could create a scalable model for other crops and regions if the 2027 rollout proves successful.
