ExxonMobil Q3 Earnings Rise as Refining Strength and Cost Savings Offset Lower Upstream Results
ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings of $15.4 billion, or $3.72 per share, while adjusted earnings reached $17.5 billion, or $4.23 per share.
Cash generation remained strong, with operating cash flow of $25.7 billion and free cash flow of $19.1 billion. ExxonMobil returned $9.4 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including $4.3 billion of dividends and $5.1 billion of share repurchases.
Energy Products was the strongest sequential contributor. Segment earnings increased to $7.17 billion from $5.47 billion in the second quarter, while adjusted earnings more than doubled to $9.05 billion. Management cited stronger refining margins, high utilization and strong operational performance, including 100% crude-unit utilization at its U.S. Gulf Coast refineries.
Upstream earnings declined sequentially to $7.09 billion from $7.93 billion, reflecting lower commodity prices and the impact of Guyana entitlement timing. Production remained high at approximately 4.5 million oil-equivalent barrels per day, supported by Guyana, the Permian Basin and Golden Pass LNG.
Year-to-date earnings reached $34.1 billion, compared with $22.3 billion a year earlier, while adjusted earnings increased to $41.0 billion from $22.5 billion. ExxonMobil said structural cost savings since 2019 have reached $16.9 billion.
The company also continued strengthening its balance sheet, reducing net debt by nearly $11 billion year to date. ExxonMobil increased its quarterly dividend to $1.07 per share, extending its annual dividend-growth streak to 44 consecutive years, and announced plans for approximately $20 billion of share repurchases in 2027, assuming reasonable market conditions.
Overall, the quarter showed that stronger refining profitability, disciplined cost control and high cash generation are helping offset softer sequential upstream conditions while supporting continued shareholder distributions.
