American Electric Power Falls 0.7% Despite Strong Q3 Earnings and Higher Long-Term Growth Outlook
American Electric Power (NASDAQ: AEP) shares fell about 0.7% even after the company reported stronger third-quarter 2026 earnings and significantly expanded its long-term capital and growth plans.
Third-quarter GAAP EPS rose to $2.18 from $1.82 a year earlier, while operating EPS increased to $2.23 from $1.80. AEP now expects full-year 2026 operating EPS to finish at or above the high end of its $6.25-$6.55 guidance range.
The company also unveiled a $100 billion five-year capital plan through 2031, supporting expected rate-base growth of more than 13% annually. AEP projects operating EPS growth of 9%-11% per year from 2027 through 2031 and a greater than 10% CAGR through 2031.
Demand growth remains a major driver. AEP signed 15 GW of new load commitments during the quarter and now expects incremental contracted load to reach 84 GW by 2031, supported by manufacturers, hyperscalers and other large customers.
The capital plan includes about $37 billion for transmission, $36 billion for generation and $22 billion for distribution. Management also expects large-load contracts to provide up to $21 billion of fixed-cost offsets for residential customers over the life of the agreements.
The 0.7% decline appears to reflect investor caution around the scale of future capital spending and financing needs, which may be offsetting the stronger earnings trajectory and accelerating electricity-demand outlook.
