Procter & Gamble Q1 Sales Rise 4% as Volume Growth Offsets Margin Pressure

Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG) reported a solid start to fiscal 2027, with first-quarter net sales rising 4% year over year to $23.3 billion and organic sales also increasing 4%.

Volume increased 2.4%, while favorable mix added 1.1% and pricing contributed 0.4%. Beauty, Grooming and Fabric & Home Care each posted roughly 5% organic sales growth, while Health Care grew 3% and Baby, Feminine & Family Care increased 3%.

Diluted EPS rose 1% to $1.97, while core EPS increased 1% to $2.00. Operating cash flow was $5.8 billion and free cash flow productivity reached 93%. P&G returned $3.9 billion to shareholders through $2.6 billion of dividends and $1.3 billion of share repurchases.

The main pressure point was profitability. Reported gross margin declined 160 basis points year over year, while core gross margin fell 150 basis points. Higher commodity costs and product reinvestment were the largest headwinds, partially offset by productivity savings, lower tariff costs and modest pricing gains. Core operating margin declined 80 basis points.

P&G maintained its fiscal 2027 organic sales growth outlook of 1% to 3% and kept core EPS growth guidance at flat to 3%, implying core EPS of $6.89 to $7.11. The company updated all-in sales growth guidance to 2% to 4% following the Thorne acquisition.

Management now expects about $1.4 billion of after-tax commodity cost pressure, along with higher interest expense, lower non-operating income and modest foreign-exchange headwinds. Combined, these factors are expected to create a roughly $0.79 per-share drag on fiscal 2027 core EPS growth.

Overall, the quarter showed healthy volume-driven sales growth and strong cash generation, but margin compression and rising commodity costs remain the key constraints on earnings growth.
