Australia Employment Falls Sharply in September as Jobless Rate Holds at 4.7%

Australia’s labor market weakened sharply in September, with employment falling by 39,300, far below expectations for a 19,600 increase and reversing the previous month’s 29,300 gain.

The unemployment rate held at 4.7%, slightly above the 4.6% consensus estimate and unchanged from the previous month.

The composition of employment was somewhat more constructive than the headline figure suggests. Full-time employment increased by 34,400 after a 4,000 decline previously, implying that the overall employment drop was driven by a much larger fall in part-time positions.
