Progressive Falls 7.3% as Q3 Profit Slips Despite Strong September Results
Progressive (NYSE: PGR) shares fell about 7.3% after the insurer reported mixed third-quarter 2026 results, with strong September profitability but a modest decline in quarterly net income.
For September, net premiums written increased 2% year over year to $7.26 billion, while net premiums earned rose 5% to $7.16 billion. Net income more than doubled to $630 million from $305 million, and earnings per share increased to $1.08 from $0.52.
The monthly combined ratio improved sharply to 90.0 from 100.4 a year earlier, indicating substantially stronger underwriting profitability. However, September results were partly affected by $231 million of pretax net realized losses on securities, compared with a $138 million gain a year earlier.
For the full third quarter, net premiums written rose 4% to $22.30 billion and net premiums earned increased 5% to $21.87 billion. Quarterly net income declined 3% to $2.54 billion, while earnings per share fell 2% to $4.37 from $4.45.
The quarterly combined ratio improved to 88.7 from 89.5, showing continued strength in underwriting margins. Policies in force also increased 6% year over year to 40.5 million, with direct auto policies up 8% and agency auto policies up 7%.
The 7.3% decline in Progressive shares appears to reflect investor focus on the year-over-year drop in quarterly earnings and significant realized investment losses, despite strong underwriting metrics, policy growth and a sharp improvement in September profitability.
